25 Family Friendly Movies To Watch This Fall

Get ready to cozy up with your loved ones this fall and enjoy some movie magic with these family friendly movies! 

I’ve rounded up a list of some of my most favorite family-friendly shows that are perfect for the autumn season.  Whether you’re in the mood for heartwarming animations or thrilling adventures, these movies are sure to entertain both kids and adults alike. 

I have also added some classics that I enjoyed watching as a kid along with some newer movies that kids will love.  So grab your snacks, snuggle under a warm blanket, and get ready for some quality family time with these fall favorites!

Family Friendly Movies 

It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

This is one of my childhood favorites! While no one else believes in this pumpkin creature, Linus patiently waits in the pumpkin patch for the elusive Halloween symbol to appear to prove it’s no myth. 

Halloweentown

After learning on her 13th birthday that she is a witch, a girl helps to stop evil an force that’s trying to take over Halloweentown.

Casper

Casper is a kind young ghost who peacefully haunts a mansion located in Maine. When specialist James Harvey comes to town, he brings along his teenage daughter, Kat. Casper quickly falls in love with Kat, but their budding relationship is complicated not only by his transparent state, but also by his troublemaking apparition uncles and their mischievous antics.

The Incredibles

In this Pixar animated film, married superheroes Mr. Incredible, and Elastigirl are forced to assume mundane lives as Bob and Helen Parr after all super-powered activities have been banned by the government. While Mr. Incredible loves his wife and kids, he longs to return to a life of adventure.  He soon gets a chance when summoned to an island to battle an out-of-control robot. It’s up to his family to save him once he gets into trouble.

Frozen

When their kingdom becomes trapped in perpetual winter, fearless Anna joins forces with mountaineer Kristoff and his reindeer sidekick to find Anna’s sister, Snow Queen Elsa, and break her icy spell. Although their  journey leads them to encounters with mystical trolls, a comedic snowman, harsh conditions, and magic at every turn, Anna and Kristoff bravely push onward in a race to save their kingdom from winter’s icy cold grip.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

This comedic film follows young Charlie Bucket and his Grandpa Joe as they join a small group of contest winners who get to tour the magical and mysterious factory of eccentric candy maker Willy Wonka. Aided by his diminutive Oompa Loompa workers, Wonka has a hidden motivation for the tour, one that he will reveal only after the children in the group show their true colors.

Swiss Family Robinson  – this has always been one of my favorite family movies

This heroic tale chronicles the courageous exploits of the Robinson family after they are shipwrecked on a deserted island. Using teamwork and ingenuity, they skillfully overcome the obstacles of nature and transform their new island home into a “civilized” community. But they face the ultimate challenge when a band of cutthroat pirates threaten to destroy their makeshift paradise.

A Dog’s Purpose

A Dog’s Purpose shares the soulful and surprising story of one devoted dog (voiced by Josh Gad) who finds the meaning of his own existence through the lives of the humans he teaches to laugh and love.

Twitches

Twin witches – “twitches”  Alex and Camryn, who were separated at birth, reunite on their 21st birthday and discover that their unusual powers double in strength when they work together.

Dennis The Menace

This movie follows the misadventures of a mischievous child, Dennis,  who menaces his next door neighbor, George Wilson, usually hangs out with his friends, Joey McDonald and Margaret Wade, and is followed everywhere by his dog, Ruff.

Matilda

This film adaptation of a Roald Dahl work tells the story of Matilda Wormwood, a gifted girl forced to put up with a crude, distant father and mother. Worse, Agatha Trunchbull, the evil principal at Matilda’s school, is a terrifyingly strict bully. However, when Matilda realizes she has the power of telekinesis, she begins to defend her friends from Trunchbull’s wrath and fight back against her unkind parents.

Tangled

When the kingdom’s most-wanted bandit, Flynn Rider, hides in a convenient tower, he immediately becomes a captive of Rapunzel, the spire’s longtime resident. Crowned with 70 feet of magical golden hair, she has been locked away for years and desperately wants freedom. The feisty teenager strikes a deal with Flynn, and together they begin a whirlwind of an adventure.

Akeelah and the Bee

Akeelah, an 11-year-old girl living in South Los Angeles, discovers she has a talent for spelling, which she hopes will take her to the National Spelling Bee. Despite her mother’s objections, Akeelah doesn’t give up on her goal. She finds help in the form of a mysterious teacher, and along with overwhelming support from her community, Akeelah might just have what it takes to make her dream come true.

Hotel Transylvania

When monsters want to get away from it all, they go to Count Dracula’s Hotel Transylvania, a lavish resort where they can be themselves without humans around to bother them. On one special weekend, Dracula invites creatures like the Invisible Man, the Mummy and others to celebrate the 118th birthday of his daughter, Mavis. However, an unforeseen complication unfolds when an ordinary human unwittingly crashes the party and falls in love with Mavis.

Hotel for Dogs

After moving into a foster home that forbids pets, siblings Andi  and Bruce must quickly find a home for their dog, Friday. The resourceful pair find an abandoned hotel, and with the help of Bruce’s mechanical skills, turn it into a pooch paradise for Friday and a number of strays. But when the inevitable barking makes neighbors suspicious, Andi and Bruce must find a way to hide their canine haven from prying eyes.

Maleficent

As a beautiful young woman of pure heart, Maleficent lives an idyllic life in a forest kingdom. When an invading army threatens the land, Maleficent rises up to become its fiercest protector. However, a terrible betrayal hardens her heart and twists her into a creature bent on revenge. She engages in an epic battle with the invading king’s successor, then curses his newborn daughter, Aurora –  realizing only later that the child holds the key to peace in the kingdom.

The Princess Bride – who doesn’t love this movie???

Who doesn’t love a good fairy tale?  This fairy tale adventure about a beautiful young woman named Buttercup and her one true love, Westley. After a long separation, they must battle the evils of the mythical kingdom of Florin to be reunited with each other. 

Hocus Pocus

After moving to Salem, Massachusetts, teenager Max Dennison explores an abandoned house with his sister Dani, and their new friend, Allison. After dismissing a story Allison tells as superstitious, Max accidentally frees a coven of evil witches who used to live in the house. Now, with the help of a magical cat, the kids must steal the witches’ book of spells to stop them from becoming immortal.

The Goonies

When two brothers find out they might lose their house they are desperate to find a way to keep their home. They find a treasure map and bring some friends along to find it. They are all out looking for the “X” and trying to get away from a group of bad guys who also want the treasure.

E.T.

A gentle alien becomes stranded on Earth, and is discovered and befriended by a young boy named Elliott. Bringing the extraterrestrial into his suburban California house, Elliott introduces E.T., as the alien is dubbed, to his brother and his little sister, Gertie, and the children decide to keep its existence a secret. Soon, however, E.T. falls ill, resulting in government intervention and a dire situation for both Elliott and the alien.

Old Yeller

While Jim Coates is off on a cattle drive, his wife, Katie, and sons, Travis and Arliss, are left behind on their Texas ranch. When a runaway dog named Old Yeller causes damage in one of their fields, Travis tries to drive him away. However, Travis and Katie both warm to Old Yeller when he saves Arliss from a bear attack. As Travis and the brave and faithful dog grow closer, concern grows about an outbreak of rabies.

Monster House

No adults believe three youths’ assertion that a neighboring residence is a living creature that means them harm. With Halloween approaching, the trio must find a way to destroy the structure before innocent trick-or-treaters meet ghastly ends.

Homeward Bound : The Incredible Journey

Before the Seavers leave for a family vacation to San Francisco, they drop off their pets – Chance, an adventurous American bulldog; Shadow, a wise golden retriever; and Sassy, a cautious cat at a friend’s ranch. But when the animals start to worry that they’ve been left for good, the three embark together on a treacherous and thrilling journey to find their way back home through the California wilderness.

Frankenweenie

Young Victor Frankenstein is a science nerd and outsider at school, but he does have one good friend: his dog, Sparky. But then, tragedy strikes, and Sparky shuffles off this mortal coil. Victor is heartbroken, but his science teacher gives him an idea of how to jolt old Sparky back to life. The experiment is successful, and all goes well, until Victor’s fellow students steal his secret and use it to resurrect other dead animals – with monstrous consequences.

Moana

An adventurous teenager sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her journey, Moana meets the once-mighty demigod Maui, who guides her in her quest to become a master way-finder. Together they sail across the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds. Along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she always sought – her own identity.
