New Year’s Goals For The Entire Family

1. Stay Active And Healthy

Encourage physical activity within the family by planning regular exercises or outdoor activities. This not only promotes a healthy lifestyle but also fosters quality family time.

Understand that this doesn’t have to be complicated. One of the ways we enjoy exercise as a family is by taking walks together.  It’s really simple, and something our kid absolutely loves.

2. Eat Nutritious Meals

Make it a family goal to embrace a healthier diet. As parents we all want to instill healthy eating habits into our kids, so why not practice healthy eating habits together.

Try incorporating more fruits, vegetables, and whole foods into your meals, and limit processed foods.

Remember, it’s okay to enjoy your favorite take out every now and again.  As the saying goes – everything in moderation.

3. Limit Screen Time

In today’s digital era, it’s important to set boundaries on screen time for both children and adults. Establish specific rules for tech usage and encourage more face-to-face interactions.

Try to keep bedrooms screen free so that sleep is not interrupted.  You should also consider keeping devices away from the dinner table.

4. Read Together

Develop a love for reading by making it a family activity.  Be intentional about reading to and with your kids. Storytime is still one of my sons favorite activities.

Incorporate regular family reading time or start a family book club to discuss and share insights on different books.

If you have teenagers, be sure to allow them to choose books that are not only on their reading level but also that are of interest to them.

You could also download a reading tracker to not only make reading more fun, but to also help your child keep up with the books that they’ve read and keep a log of books they would like to read in the future.

5. Volunteer As A Family

Spread positivity and compassion by engaging in volunteer activities as a family. Look for local charities or community events where you can contribute your time and skills.

Volunteer at a soup kitchen, or keep it closer to home and help out some of your elderly neighbors.

Whatever you choose to do, make a concerted effort to help someone in need, and do it together as a family.

6. Improve Communication

Enhance family relationships by focusing on effective communication. Encourage open and honest conversations, and make time for meaningful discussions about each family member’s thoughts and feelings.

One way to ensure open communication is by having meals together as a family.  During this time allow each family member to share what’s going on in their lives.

Another way to foster open communication is by having weekly family meetings.  You can have open discussions (without judgment) which helps your kids to feel comfortable sharing their problems with you.

7. Have Family Bible Study

Make reading God’s word a priority.  Gather the family together every evening to pray and read the Word aloud.  Be sure to have discussions about what you read.

As you practice these spiritual disciplines, it will help your children develop and grow a relationship with Christ.

8. Manage Finances Wisely

Teach financial responsibility to the entire family by setting a goal to manage money wisely. Involve children in budgeting discussions, saving plans, and encourage responsible spending habits.

9. Plan Regular Family Adventures

Me and my crew enjoy spontaneous family trips.  We’ll pack a couple of bags and head out for a quick weekend getaway in a heartbeat.  It’s something we absolutely love doing.

Create a bucket list of family adventures you’d like to experience throughout the year. This could include camping trips, exploring new hiking trails, visiting museums, or embarking on road trips.

10. Compliment And Encourage One Another

Be intentional about being kind to and encouraging one another this year.  I mean, we could all use a little more encouragement, right?

Challenge each family member to notice the good in another family member,  then express it to them verbally.  This is a simple and effective way to encourage one another, and improve your family life.

When you compliment one another, it increases gratitude, encourages kindness, and helps mend any hurt.

Make it a habit to recognize and praise each family member’s milestones, whether big or small, and celebrate them with joy and encouragement.

Final Thoughts

By incorporating these New Year’s goals into your family routine, you’ll create a positive and supportive environment where each individual family member can thrive.

Remember, setting goals together is the first step towards making them a reality. Wishing you a year filled with love, growth, and joy!
